Diversity Analysis
Genetic diversity analysis and DNA sequencing services for crops, seeds and more.
Analysing genetic diversity
Overview
While ‘diversity’ can be studied at many different levels – in biological, cultural and societal contexts – DArT’s efforts are directed at analysis of genetic diversity, predominantly through DNA sequence analysis.Â
Understanding genetic diversity
Understanding genetic diversity is important. For natural populations it underpins their capacity to adapt to changing environments, while in agricultural systems it is used to develop new breeds of animals and new crop varieties.Â
It is also important to understand genetic diversity of weeds and pathogens, as those threaten crop yields, food production and livelihoods. DArT’s work has contributed to all those domains of genetic diversity characterisation.
We have also contributed a large volume of work to characterising the genetic diversity of crops feeding the world – through genome profiling large genebank collections of wheat, maize, rice, sorghum, cassava, potato, sweet potato and large variety of legume crops.
Benefits and use cases
Our genetic diversity analysis services have a range of benefits and use cases including:
- Supporting breeding projects for crops and seeds
- Characterising genetic diversity in crops
- Understanding genetic information of weeds and threats to agriculture
Case study
We have delivered large projects of this kind for a number of CGIAR (Consultative Group for International Agricultural Research) Institutes as well as a large number of national collections. This has included practically all of the 30 crops most important for food security. We also contributed in a significant way to the better understanding of minor and "orphan" crops, many of which are important in the agricultures of lesser developed countries.
